The Solar-B observatory is scheduled to be launched on a
Japanese M-V rocket out of
Kagoshima, Japan on 2006 September 23, 06:00-07:00 Japanese Standard Time (JST) or September 22, 21:00-22:00 UT. A backup launch window extends from September 24-30.
Founded in February 1962, the Uchinoura Space Center (USC) is located
in Uchinoura on the east of Ohsumi Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture.
The area of USC, 71 ha in total, is mostly hilly. Facilities for
launching rockets, telemetry, tracking and command stations for
rockets and satellites, and optical observation posts are on site,
all prepared by flattening the tops of several hills and connected
to each other by road. Since 1962, more than 300 rockets have been
launched, including satellite launch vehicles. The USC used to be
called the Kagoshima Space Center (KSC) and was renamed on October 1, 2003.
