Another Use for a Polar Orbit
Image of the spacecraft showing location of
instruments The image to the left shows the polar orbits of two satellites, MetOp and NOAA. The MetOp and NOAA satellites study the weather and climate of the Earth. Because of the polar orbits, the two satellites can examine the entire surface (or atmosphere). The effect of a polar orbit and the mapping that it can do is demonstrated in the mpeg animation (click on the image or GO TO ESA).
