Old Cycle Spots Return

image of active region 10989 corresponding X-ray image
27 March 2008: Old cycle sunspots have returned. The image on the left is NOAA active region 10989, as seen in G-band, 430.5 nm. In the X-ray image (to the right), AR 10989 is the bright region on the far left. In the image on the left below, AR 10987 is shown, which corresponds to the bright (in the X-ray image) region close to the center of the solar disk. The solar surface (photosphere) currently has three numbered spots (see the Solar Monitor). In the last 24 hours, there have been two B-class flares (as seen by GOES ) and on March 25, there was an M-class flare associated with AR 10989. For an explanation of flare classes, go to Space Weather's Classification of X-ray Solar Flares. More XRT images may be found at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO).

27 March 2008 SOHO/MDI Intensity Image: From left to right, the numbered active regions on the solar disk are: AR 10989, 10988, 10987. This image is from the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory's (SOHO) Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI).

Also from the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory's (SOHO) Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI)., these two images show zooms of the two active regions. Hinode is pointed to the far right (more western) spots of AR 10987.
