Kp Index

This is a measure of how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is .Each bar is a 3-hour average of the level of disturbances from dozens of magnetic observatories across the world. The most severe storms have Kp values of 8 or 9 on this scale.

These disturbances correlate with spectacular aurora sightings, and with disturbances to the operations of satellites as well as electrical power grids and pipeline corrosion rates on the ground.
