Proton Flux

Solar Proton Monitor on the SOHO spacecraft. The Proton Monitor data records the flow of energetic protons through an instrument onboard the SOHIO satellite .During a solar energetic particle event, secondary particles produced by the energetic particles cause an elevated counting rate in the above plot ,and indicate a solar outburst in progress, such as the one that occurred near 08:00 Universal Time on July 31 in the plot above.

This monitor, along with the GOES X-ray plot monitor ,can tell us about whether an electromagnetic (x-ray) event has occurred, and also whether there were high-energy particles also involved. Both of these forms of flaring activity can affect satellite and ground-based systems on Earth or in near-earth space.
