UNDER STUDY

Ionosphere SIDs

Many radio operators monitor very low frequency bands near 20,000 to 60,000 Hertz. These channels are very sensitive to changes in the ionosphere which acts like an almost completely reflective mirror for these radio signals. Solar flares cause changes in the electrical properties of the ionosphere, that alter the signal strength of natural background emission at these wavelengths ( from lightning etc). So, 'Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances' are directly correlated with solar X-ray flare events.
